Understand Skills Assessment Pathways

Requirements vary significantly depending on the visa subclass and stream. Different visa subclasses have specific rules regarding the type, validity, and suitability of a skills assessment.

Temporary Graduate Visa - Subclass 485

You must have nominated an occupation on the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL). Mandatory for Post-Vocational Education Work Stream.

Requirements
  • You must provide evidence that you have at least applied for a skills assessment at the time of your visa lodgement.

Validity
  • Valid for 3 years.

A provisional assessment for a 485 visa is usually not suitable for a permanent points-tested visa (GSM).

General Skilled Migration (GSM) - Subclass 189, 190 & 491

Requires a "Full" Skills Assessment. Provisional assessments (such as those for the 485 visa) are not suitable for these subclasses.

Requirements
  • Mandatory. You must have a suitable, valid skills assessment before you are invited to apply.

Validity
  • Assessments are valid for 3 years from the date of issue. If a shorter period (e.g., 2 years), that period applies. If a period longer than 3 years is stated, validity is still capped at 3 years.

Skills in Demand (SID) - Subclass 482

Compulsory for certain "high-risk" occupations (mostly trades) and specific nationalities. It verifies you have the skills needed for immediate work in Australia.

Requirements
  • Most authorities require between 1 to 3 years of post-qualification experience to issue a positive result.

Validity
  • Must be obtained within the 3 years prior to submitting your visa application.

Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) - Subclass 186

Mandatory for the Direct Entry stream. You must demonstrate at least 3 years of full-time relevant work experience at the required skill level.

Validity
  • Valid for 3 years from the date of assessment. If no expiry date is shown, the 3-year rule applies. The assessment must be obtained before the visa application is lodged.

Your Foundation for Migration

A skills assessment is the independent verification that your qualifications, training, and work history meet Australian standards for your nominated occupation. It is the key that unlocks eligibility for most skilled visa pathways.

Skills assessments are issued by relevant assessing authorities, professional bodies or regulators authorised by the Australian Government. Each authority sets its own standards, procedures, and timeframes to determine if an applicant is "job-ready" for the Australian market.

If no expiry date is shown, the Department of Home Affairs generally considers it valid for 3 years. If the authority states a shorter period (e.g., 2 years), that period applies.

Usually, no. Assessing authorities often have different criteria for "Provisional" (485) assessments versus "Full" (Permanent Migration) assessments.

Most assessing authorities (like ANMAC or Accounting bodies) require your English test results before they will issue a skills assessment. We will confirm the requirements for your specific body.

For Doctors, full AHPRA registration is generally accepted as a skills assessment. For Solicitors, evidence of admission to practice in an Australian State or Territory is required.

This depends on the ANZSCO skill level. Generally, it means holding a qualification equivalent to an Australian degree or diploma and having at least 1 year of post-qualification work experience.
