Proving Your English Proficiency
Most Australian skilled visas require you to prove a specific level of English language proficiency. The baseline for primary applicants on skilled visas is generally Competent English.
Accepted Tests and The Competent Baseline
The Department of Home Affairs accepts tests from approved secure testing centers (online-only variants are generally rejected). To achieve the baseline of "Competent English," you must meet the following minimum scores across all four components in a single sitting:
*Note: For TOEFL iBT tests taken on or after 21 January 2026, you must select 'Taking TOEFL for Australia' during registration, or the result will be invalid for immigration purposes.
Maximizing Your Points
While "Competent" allows you to apply, it grants zero extra points in SkillSelect. To boost your EOI competitiveness, you need:
- Proficient English (10 Points): e.g., IELTS 7.0 or PTE 65 in all bands.
- Superior English (20 Points): e.g., IELTS 8.0 or PTE 79 in all bands.
⚠️ Critical Risk Alert:
English test results are typically valid for 3 years from the test date for most skilled visas. If your test expires while you are waiting in the SkillSelect pool and you receive an invitation, your application will face an adverse outcome.
At Immilex, we cross-reference your test dates, specific visa pathway requirements, and score thresholds to ensure complete compliance before you apply.
