Timing Your Skills Assessment Perfectly
For the majority of skilled visas, a positive skills assessment from a recognized Australian assessing authority is mandatory. However, these documents do not last forever. Presenting an expired assessment will trigger an immediate adverse outcome.
The 3-Year Baseline Rule
Under Department of Home Affairs regulations, your skills assessment is valid for a maximum of 3 years from the date it was issued. This 3-year limit applies to your visa application or your SkillSelect invitation date. Even if the assessing authority states the document is valid for longer, the Department of Home Affairs will only accept it if it is under 3 years old.
The Temporary Graduate (Subclass 485) Exception
A critical trap many applicants fall into involves the Subclass 485 Temporary Graduate visa. Skills assessments obtained specifically for the 485 visa are assessed under different criteria and are not valid for use on permanent skilled visas (like the 189 or 190) or employer-sponsored regional visas (like the 494). You must obtain a full, post-graduate skills assessment for those pathways.
⚠️ Critical Risk Alert:
Do not lodge an EOI if your skills assessment is weeks away from expiring. If you are invited after the 3-year mark, your EOI claims are invalid, and your visa cannot be granted.
At Immilex, our file audits meticulously track document validity timelines, ensuring your credentials are fully compliant before you are exposed to any regulatory risks.
